AAPI Heritage Month Event: From Messaging to Mobilizing: Advancing AAPI Equity & Solidarity in the Age of Electoral Mis- & Disinformation

After an engaging and informative breakout session at our 2023 Annual Convening, where we highlighted efforts of Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) groups who are “cutting against the grain” to reach a large swath of AAPI voters across the country, FCCP will continue the conversation this AAPI Heritage Month! We know that mobilization efforts of the AAPI voting bloc require the formation of shared narratives and accurate messaging that advance equity within AAPI communities, while also building solidarity among all communities of color that have suffered at the hands of white supremacy. As our desire to consume news and other forms of media multiply, especially through a cultural lens, it is critical for us to be aware of the true impact that electoral mis- and disinformation have on our ability to put power in the hands of disenfranchised people.

On May 23 from 1:00-2:00 p.m. ET, we will be hosting a virtual discussion, From Messaging to Mobilizing: Advancing AAPI Equity & Solidarity in the Age of Electoral Mis- & Disinformation, that will feature a group of expert panelists who work with a collective of diverse AAPI communities. Among the topics of discussion will be the various electoral “information harms,” including examples of disinformation campaigns AAPI communities have been the subject of, as well as disinformation campaigns concerning other BIPOC communities that AAPI communities have been the target for circulating. We will also discuss strategies being utilized to combat such disinformation and how philanthropy can support the fight against harmful public narratives impacting electoral organizing, as well as the advancement of equity and solidarity, among AAPI communities.
