The discussion underscored the stakes for Census in sharp relief, particularly given the disproportionate impacts of the pandemic, economic crisis, and natural disasters on Black, Indigenous, Latinx, and Asian communities and a growing movement to dismantle systemic racism and build a more just society. Our organizations are committed to continue to Get-Out-the-Count, reflect on the capacity that census has helped to strengthen and build, and leverage this work for more inclusive regional planning, civic engagement, fair redistricting, and more.
One effort is already underway! The Census Legacies project is now live. It’s an emerging network—of funders, nonprofits, businesses, and Census Complete Count Committees from around the country—seeking to re-purpose Census outreach tables and ensuring that historically undercounted communities have an equal voice in shaping the future of our regions.
