Keynote: Nancy MacLean, Democracy in Chains

Table Discussions: Playing the Long Game for an Open + Equitable Democracy

Plenary Description: Power, money, and the radical right’s 60 year-long game have paid off in the anti-democratic, corporatist, racist and xenophobic policies we now see unfolding at the state and federal levels. Nancy MacLean, author of Democracy in Chains: The Deep History of the Radical Right’s Stealth Plan for America, will examine the interlocking components of this decades-long strategy to undermine democracy, and will help us conceive of strategies that build our long game to create a democracy where all Americans have a voice and a say.

Table discussions to follow. We will strategize about how we might better connect the dots between the influence of money in politics and the other threats to our democracy—all as a way of starting to unchain our democracy.

Organizers: Sarah Knight, Open Society Foundations and Melissa Spatz, Piper Fund
