Minnesota is often considered an example of how robust engagement by nonprofit organizations, strong democratic systems, and engaged election officials can deliver voter turnout that is regularly among the highest in the nation. But a deeper look reveals that significant racial disparities in civic participation and society persist. In many ways, Minnesota – and the Midwest as a whole – serve as a lab for others to understand the challenges facing democracy in the states and how, together, the FCCP community might solve them. What innovations have led regional leaders to their successes, and how are they addressing the challenge of creating a democracy that works for everyone? What other recent lessons from states and the nation can help guide our work?

In May of 2016, the FCCP community gathered on the precipice of the 2016 national elections to discuss and debate the elements required to build real change in the states – change that will lead to an effective, inclusive and accountable democracy. Together we surfaced the best new thinking about how to turn back the tide of money in elections, protect and expand access to the franchise for all, and empower traditionally disadvantaged communities. We examined the 2016 election environment and hosted strategy sessions to chart our paths forward toward the North Star.
