Four Freedoms Fund funder briefing, A Tale of Two Counties: Immigrants and Local Leadership in the Suburbs, Tuesday, July 22nd, 2008, 12pm-4pm, Long Island, NY - Please join the Four Freedoms Fund in the oldest suburb in the nation and learn how the immigration debate is playing out. With an increasingly diverse population of over 2.7 million, Long Island represents a dramatic tale of two counties and their diametric approaches to addressing the issue of immigration in their communities.
Space is limited, so please RSVP to Meg Shoemaker by Tuesday July 15, mshoemaker@publicinterestprojects.org. More information about this funder briefing can be found in the attached flyer.
The Fund’s Immigrant Rights and Integration portfolio supports the advancement of immigrant rights and integration, including access to opportunities they need to succeed and contribute. While grantmaking in other program areas is mostly local, the funding in this area is focused in the Bay Area and at the state-wide level in California with selected national level work. Over the past six years (2002-07), the Fund made grants totaling almost $12 million in the Immigration portfolio ($3.85 M in 2007) and aims to increase the magnitude and impact of its giving in the next period to advance this movement.
The Fund seeks to identify a leader who will work with other leaders to strongly advance the movement for full rights, including earned legalization, and civic integration to create a more inclusive society. The Fund wishes to engage with candidates to learn their vision of the future of the movement and how they would lead such a program at the Fund.
For more information, please see the attached job description and qualifications, or visit The Fund's website at www.haasjr.org.

DEMOCRACIA USA
Democracia USA (D-USA) is a national Hispanic nonpartisan civic engagement, community organizing, voter empowerment, and leadership training organization based in Miami, FL. D-USA, founded in 2004, registered 72,000 new voters in Florida that year. In 2006, D-USA expanded to AZ, NJ, and PA and was credited by the AP with generating 70 percent of new, nonpartisan voter registrations in the Hispanic community. Now in its fifth year, D-USA is the premier, sustainable Hispanic outreach and organizing program with operations in five states.
This year Democracia USA began a new partnership with the National Council of La Raza (NCLR), the largest national Hispanic civil rights and advocacy organization in the United States. This transition represents a major step toward increasing Hispanic empowerment and participation in the political and electoral processes of this country. Democracia USA has also played a leadership role in the development of the We Are America Alliance, a national group of nonprofit organizations doing voter education, citizenship, voter registration, and Get-Out-The-Vote work. Democracia USA focuses exclusively on Hispanic civic engagement.
According to the United States Census Bureau, between 2000 and 2004 the total U.S. population grew 4.3 percent, while the Hispanic/Latino population grew 17 percent. By mid-century, there will be an estimated 100 million Hispanics in America. In the nation’s four largest states – CA, FL, NY, and TX – Hispanics will comprise one-quarter to one-third of the electorate by 2020. 2008 is a very important electoral year for Hispanics as many issues of concern to their communities will be defined; it is important to ensure their voices are heard in the public sphere.

Topic: Leveraging your policy impact: How Foundation Funding Can Help Make Democracy Work in 2008.
When: Tuesday, June 10, 2008, 1:00 to 2:15 pm Eastern (10:00 am to 11:15 am Pacific)
Note this is date and time change
Co-hosts: Harriet Barlow (HKH Foundation), Anne Bartley (AB Fund), Judy DeSarno (Susan Thompson Buffett Foundation), Marcia Egbert (Gund Foundation), Sandy Newman (Newman and Associates), Karen Plafker (Wellspring Advisors), Bill Roberts (Beldon Fund), and Don Tatzin (Sandler Foundation)
Why: Because voting is at the heart of democracy, public policy decisions are distorted when minorities, unmarried women and youth are under-represented at the ballot box.
Non-partisan strategies to increase voter participation can have a highly leveraged impact on public policy by providing a voice for marginalized children and families, while strengthening the capacity and clout of nonprofit organizations.
This year, funders can double that leverage because of matching grant opportunities provided by other foundations.
Join us for a briefing to discuss this topic and some of the most rigorously evaluated programs boosting voter participation. Regardless of which candidates these typically overlooked voters may choose to support, their needs will be better represented if they participate in the democratic process.
Please RSVP by emailing VoterEngagement08@gmail.com. We look forward to the conversation and hope you will join us on June 10th. | | | Job Title: Development Manager
